I just had a thought that is partially wonderful and partially horrible.
What if they don’t find Neal the whole season.
What if Emma and Regina spend the entire season bonding and growing close, learning to trust each other, becoming friends (yada yada yada), and we really do get a whole freaking season of Swan Queen amazingness, but- !!! At the end of the season, they find Neal.
Regina would be really jealous, but she maybe doesn’t even quite understand why she feels so devastated. So the fourth season is when she starts to realize that she has those kinds of feelings for Emma, but Emma’s trying it out with Neal and Regina’s just miserable and trying to bury her feelings (but Snow finds out because I refuse to let go of that).
What Regina doesn’t know, though, is that Emma is really confused because it’s not the same with Neal as it was before. Emma finds herself missing Regina whenever she’s with Neal, and craving her company. Eventually she realizes that Regina fulfills her in a way that Neal never has and never could, and that maybe her feelings for her run deeper than just friendship.
